Internet Explorer: The Rise and Fall of the Web’s Most Controversial Browser

Remember the days of waiting endlessly for a webpage to load, only to see the dreaded “Internet Explorer has stopped working” message? Love it or hate it, Internet Explorer (IE) was once the king of web browsers, shaping how millions experienced the internet.

At TechBridge Latam, we love diving into tech history, especially when it involves iconic (and sometimes infamous) software like IE. Let’s take a nostalgic trip through its rise, dominance, and eventual fall from grace.

The Birth of Internet Explorer

Launched in 1995 by Microsoft, Internet Explorer was initially based on Spyglass Mosaic, an early web browser. Bundled with Windows 95, it quickly gained traction, going head-to-head with Netscape Navigator in the infamous “Browser Wars.”

By the early 2000s, IE dominated with over 90% market share, thanks to its integration with Windows. But with great power came… Well, a lot of frustration.

Why Did Everyone Hate Internet Explorer?

Despite its popularity, IE became notorious for:

🔹 Slow performance – Pages took forever to load.
🔹 Security flaws – A favorite target for hackers and malware.
🔹 Lack of innovation – While competitors like Firefox and Chrome pushed speed and extensions, IE lagged behind.
🔹 Compatibility issues – Developers dreaded making websites work on IE.

Yet, for years, it remained the default browser for many simply because it came pre-installed.

The Decline and Legacy

With the rise of Google Chrome (2008) and Mozilla Firefox, IE’s flaws became impossible to ignore. Microsoft tried reviving it with Edge in 2015, but the damage was done.

In 2022, Microsoft officially retired Internet Explorer, marking the end of an era. Yet, its legacy lives on whether in memes, nostalgia, or the lessons it taught the tech world about innovation and user experience.

What Replaced Internet Explorer?

Today, browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari dominate, offering speed, security, and customization. But we’ll always remember IE as the browser that paved the way, even if it drove us crazy along the journey.
